School Council

• End of September: received donation from Desert Financial – three ice machines, two ice troughs, craft machine, teacher goodie bags.
• Oct. 6, 2023: Quarter 1 ended.
• Oct. 9-13: Fall break. Gym floors were refinished.
• Oct. 14: PSAT – 55 students present.
• Oct. 16-20: Spirit Week and Homecoming. Student comments later.
• Oct. 26: Fall conferences. Sponsored dinner from Tacos Califia.
• Band: Excellent showing – two outstanding performances. District performance and state championship this month.
• Cafeteria A/V system updated.

• Ten minutes every week, every class period. Information and prep for early release tomorrow.

• Fall survey: 332 responses. Most were qualitative.   
  • Do you feel safe on campus? Lots of positive feedback. Many (almost half) referenced teachers and how they help them feel safe on campus – ID checks at the door, adults visible on campus, and caring teachers.  
• Messaging and branding: What is the best way to receive information? Top response was Instagram. Also effective were NCTV, Facebook, email, loudspeaker announcements, school website, flyers. Parent perspective: Many Instagram accounts, sometimes causing confusion.

• Held at Tacos Califia. Offer 15 percent discount to staff and students. Boosters will be getting them a banner.
• Seed has been laid.

• Band exhibition on Wednesday, Nov. 1.
• PVHS football game on Nov. 3. Also senior night. Future freshmen for the band.
  • Football, cheer, band (before game). All other sports during halftime.
  • Athletic Council typically has decorated for senior night.
• Nov. 8: Future Rattler Night in the auditorium.
• Nov. 14: CTE showcase along with AVID.
• Middle school showcase
• Nov. 16-18: Musical in the auditorium.

• Homecoming: Assembly went well, but a little behind in scheduling. Biggest concern is that students don’t stop talking, especially during the National Anthem.  
• Homecoming Spirit Week: Boosters funded it.  
• Homecoming Dance: Had a little incident and lighting challenge. We will work on it next time. Challenge with students bringing ID. StuGo will mention on Instagram for the next dance.
• Phoenix Hospital: We are working on a possible toy drive.
• Preparing for Hoopcoming: Date to be determined, probably in February.
  • Going to ask students via poll if they want to be semi-formal or casual dance.
• Fundraisers: More than $800 raised so far.
• Food Drive: Key Club will take over.
• Parent input: Disappointed there wasn’t any fanfare for the game. Not a lot of Homecoming celebration. More focus was on the dance. They suggested more collaboration between groups involved with Homecoming for the game.

• Approval, funding and generous donation to take care of all fields with seeding and fertilization.  
• Long-standing problem of how it will be funded in the future. District provides $1,600 and it costs about $8,000.
• Mascot has been funded and ordered – four-legged rattler (purple and black).

• Referred to "Curriculum and Supplemental Resource Process" document.
• Discussed how we verify and adopt curriculum.

• Free and Reduced: Currently at 64 percent. We have until 100th day of school. This impacts federal funding and whether students get assistance with fees.
• Emergency cards: Online but will also be sending out hard copies.  
• ACT Prep: 10 minutes, two times a week. ACT date in March. Students' scores are posted on individual accounts or they see their counselors. Do we still get hard copies? We will need to follow up on that.

• Homecoming dance will be in the small gym on Oct. 20, 2023, after the football game. Presale for tickets will be $15, and $20 at the door. Or they can buy a package of shirt, football game, and dance for $25.
• Homecoming spirit week and assembly themes were announced.
• Froshmore fest (for freshmen and sophomores)
  • Price:$10 or $15, maybe lower – not as expensive as homecoming.
  • Theme: fall or Halloween – still deciding.
  • Date: Tuesday of homecoming week from 3 to 5 p.m.

• UPC rep didn't attend last meeting. Mid-day meetings sometimes make it hard for people to attend.

• NCHS would benefit if there is a PR campaign toward MTMS, because there is a lot of pressure to attend Pinnacle. There are lots of opportunities at NCHS, such as festival sports, including participation from PHS.
• Lots of students go to PHS even if they are within walking distance to NCHS.
• Bring band and mascot to feeder schools. Prep them to come to NCHS (advertising).
• A few years ago, an English teacher went to feeder school to talk about freshmen classes. Seeing teachers can be powerful for students.
• Should be StuGo sponsor night for feeder schools. Maybe work with StuGo at middle schools. Or consider an on-site StuGo conference, possibly inviting feeder schools.
• High population of Open Enrollment – use this for marketing. We are here by choice.
• Nov. 3 football game: Feeder schools are invited to join NCHS band.
• Next meeting will be Monday, Oct. 30.

This year we have 3 main focuses:

• Creating positive culture on campus: RISE.
• Instruction and student learning.  Collaboration, critical reading. 
• Assessment: Support students who many not have learned it yet. Encourage student growth and learning.

Upcoming events:

• 9/6 - Picture retake
• 9/15 - NHS blood drive
• 9/20 - Superintendent Student Advisory Council: Superintendent to meet with principals and 1 student representative. 
• Also in September we will be starting the Principal Advisory Council (PAC) with four representatives from each grade level. They will meet with principal for feedback, concerns, and suggestions.
• 9/22 & 9/23 - Theatre performance
• 9/25 - Fall recess

Spirit days were successful. Saw a lot of colors. They are working on getting more school spirit. Panda Express and Chipotle were successful – $120 for Chipotle. Nautical bowls on early release days sold out. Assembly went well.

Concern about parents dropping off in the turn lane on Union Hills. Brought up to Officer Brad but he said he doesn’t enforce traffic laws. His domain is more on campus.

Went to a spirit conference at Ironwood. Listened to motivational speakers regarding leadership skills. 

Planning a senior sunrise. Not excusing seniors for 1st hour. Event will be 6 to 7 a.m. They will paint crowns. Nautical Bowls will be there. Getting food donations: Dunkin Donuts, Jack in the Box, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, True Brew. Will have Froshmore fest; last year, 50 students attended.

Focus is the Special Olympics. Used to have it. Working with Mrs. Robidoux, Mrs. Farley and Ms. Dandos. Hoping to bring it back to campus.
